Mayan Pole Flyers...

Its a bird! Its a plane! No! Its a Mayan Pole Flyer!

If you walk down 5th Street towards the Cozumel Ferry, you are bound to come across the Mayan Pole Flyers doing their highly entertaining recreation of a ceremonial ritual of the Totonac Indians. Five Indians begin with a small dance on the ground, and then one by one,
they climb the high in the sky pole to the very top. The one sitting in the middle plays a flute as they begin their accent, and another goes around to the crowd and collects donations. (Being afraid of heights, I'm thinking he's the lucky one!) Once they have enough, he gives them the signal, and away they go! They flip backwards over their sitting perch, and their ropes begin to unravel while they swing through the air. It never fails to impress no matter how many times I've seen it.

  1. This scares me so bad every time I watch it! So exciting to see, though :)
