When I got back from
my visit to the States, I was completely shocked with I saw the grocery stores in Mexico already getting stocked up for Christmas. In September? Really? Then I start to think, well they do the same thing in the US, I should know from years of retail. I guess, I was
just surprised to find that even in Mexico they get all geared up just like the US. Go figure.
I spent double time at the store because they had moved all of my usual food to different locations in order to make room for the Christmas goods. All the "gringo food" was moved over by the mayonnaise. Not that I really buy gringo food, but I like to browse it occasionally to see if they have anything I can't live without. Interestingly enough, that is exactly where I found the lemon juice which was absolutely impossible to find anywhere else in Mexican grocery stores.
The main aisles were crammed with pallets of Barbie, Buzz Lightyear, and Christmas Trees. While strolling by one aisle I found a Leap Frog talking bear my sister had picked up for Taelyn at
Once Upon a Child for $4.50 USD. The same bear was $70 USD in Mexico. Of course, I know the one in the store was new, but still. Am I cheap, or do you all think that's crazy too?
I haven't seen any Christmas stuff at my grocery store yet! But I do remember last year seeing Liverpool in Cancun stocked up with fake trees, lights and playing carols in September. Seriously? That sh** shouldn't be allowed until Black Friday or later.
ReplyDeleteI was skyping with my friend in Seattle last week and she told me her local grocery store was selling Xmas decorations already. Too soon! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm used to it in the US because I worked retail and we always starting setting up Christmas in September. I just was so surprised that Mexico or at least where I live was doing the same.
DeleteToys are so expensive in Mexico! I went down to Oaxaca last year and took some Transformers action figures for my stepsons. The same ones that I paid less than $10 for here in the U.S. were almost $25 at the Bodega Aurrera.
ReplyDeleteYeah, everything is more expensive here. We buy all of Taelyn's toys, clothes, shoes, baby accessories, etc in the states and mule back. Same thing for our stuff too. Prices are just outrageous!
