Pizza Condiments...

I always get a little giggle when we order pizza and the condiments they put in our little baggy. Soooo different than the US which you get crushed chili peppers and parmesan cheese. Here in our lovely world of Mexico you get ketchup, crushed chili peppers, hot sauce, and worcestershire sauce. I don't get it. But, I still think its funny.

Panaderia...

I love the bakery department in Mexican grocery stores. When we first arrived here, I would always end up leaving the store with a bag full of treats and 5 more pounds! Over time, we've curbed our sweet tooth a bit, and now, I only pick up something when I see Seth's favorite in

Carne en su Jugo...

My friend, Lupita, wanted to show me how to make Carne en su Jugo which is a soup very specific to Guadalajara. Of course, I jumped right on the offer! This soup is so simple and easy and fills you up. One thing I've come to learn about Mexican cooking is how to keep it simple. Most recipes only take 5-6 ingredients yet taste like they must have a million things going on in

Mexicans Know a Good Bar-b-que...

My neighbors wanted to throw us a good-bye bar-b-que last week. I've been to quite a few bar-b-ques over this last year, and let me tell you...Mexicans know how to do it. Typically, they don't start until around 8pm (which is pretty much how everything rolls here), and they will go until the wee hours of the night. You know you're at a Mexican bar-b-que when there is meat, lots and lots of meat. There will also always be the usual stand-bys of baked potatoes, onions, chips, and beer. But really, its about the meat. This is so different than the US which is all about the sides and dessert. I think I like the Mexican way

I'm an Addict...

Hello, my name is Kristen, and I'm addicted to horchata. Yes, I know its shameful that I must have this delicious drink at least 3 times a week, but I just can't help myself. I know that my husband will one day be ashamed of all the pounds I have put on because it is so horribly unhealthy for me. I know that I'm a bad example to my daughter when she sees me order a grande instead of a chica like I should. I know! I know! I know! But to be honest, I've accepted and embraced my horchata addiction, and I don't really have any plans of getting help with my issue.

There I said it. I'm glad I just laid it out there. And I'm sure that if you too have had horchata then you understand why I have this

Dinner with Friends...

My friends Alejando (Alex) and his wife Katia had a baby boy, Matel, last November. I, of course, loved having another baby in our little apartment cove, but mostly, I loved having another mother. Because toys are so expensive in Mexico, Seth and I have brought back a few things for Matel or given some of the toys that Taelyn has outgrown. Alex and Katia, like all Mexicans, say, "Kristen, its too much. No. No." We as Americans never believe there is such a thing as too much. We also know that they really do want the things but are just being polite. So I made a deal with Katia. I'll give you Taelyn's old

Mexican Cooking 101...

I'm sure I've mentioned it before, but I love to cook. I'm gradually trying to overcome my fear of baking, but cooking is where my heart will always be and stay. As an expat, I've tried to broaden my recipe repertoire and use the spices and local ingredients available in my food. Since I am absolutely in love with Mexican food (not Tex-mex which I love too), I knew I had to overcome my fear of chilis, peppers, and the stovetop grill. So when my friend, Maria, offered to come over and make chili rellenos with me,

Got Milk?...

Yes, US, we drink our milk in cardboard cartons here in Mexico. No, it is not refrigerated when you buy it. Yes, it tastes exactly the same. Yes, its still milk. Yes, its still good for you.

I know every other country out there has their milk in non-refrigerated cartons. But, do they bulk stack it on 9 pallets? Maybe they got an excess shipment of something. Only in Mexico!

El Fogon...

Source

I've been meaning to share with you this little place for awhile now, but I just never seemed to get around to it. Seth and I have been going to El Fogon for about 3 months now when we are craving cheap and flavorful tacos and arrachera (flank steak). Its a well known fact that the best

Oh the Places We Will Eat!...

The one thing Seth and I love the most about living here is our ability to get street food pretty much anywhere of all kinds of varieties. Sometimes, when I don't feel like cooking, I go out on my bike to either 10th or 5th street and do my food stand hunt. Some are amazing. Some are so so. Some are kind of bland. But so far, we have not found any that are bad. But maybe our taste buds are not

Car Wash and Breakfast...

What a fantastic concept...car wash and then just a few steps away, and I can get my breakfast on too! Taelyn and I got out early in the morning so we could beat the car wash traffic, and I decided we needed to get some yum yum. Getting your car washed here is
